Hammer Killer - page 1

It just hit me that I never got around to posting the 3-page comic I made for Zona Fantástica (a comics/illustration magazine). So why not do it now? I've been extremely busy and it's been difficult to find the time to produce new material, so that gives me a good excuse to post pages that are a few months old.

The comic I did was supposed to work like a Grindhouse trailer. I get a real kick out of those old, horror-grindhouse movie trailers - which are frequently better than the movies themselves - with lots of violence and cheesy taglines, so I tried to capture a little bit of that spirit with the comic. It was also a way to use my character - the Hammer Killer - on something other than a few random illustrations. He's a psychopath - much like Jason or Michael Myers - that comes out in St. John's night and starts hammering people to death. Fun, uh? Well, the joke is that in my hometown (Oporto, Portugal) people celebrate St. John's night by going outside and hammering each other in the head with plastic hammers. This guy just happens to use a real one.

Well, enough typing for now. I leave you with the first page of the Hammer Killer's comic debut. Click on the page to fullview, and enjoy!

If you want to buy any or all of the Zona issues so far, you can do so at Zona's Blog (shipping is free inside Portugal).

Walter Sobchak

The Big Lebowski is an awesome movie, and that is a good enough reason to break out the good old pencil and paper and work on a little fan art. That's what I did last year, and this was the result. I did this in a time crunch, so I used a very simple coloring technique, to mimic the style and look of an old, worn out comic. I have to do a more elaborate piece dedicated to the Dude and the rest of the awesome cast of characters this movie has, but, for now, here's Walter Sobchak keeping you company. Enjoy!

Great Scott! 25 already?

Yeah, it's true. Today is the 25th birthday of Back to the Future, that cinematic slice of awesomeness! My friend J.B. Martins, writer of Kubrick's Garage, said it'd be cool if I drew up a little pic to celebrate this important date. I didn't have much time to put something together, but here is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it! Click on the image to fullview.

Happy birthday to Doc Brown and Marty McFly. Thanks for all the hours of fun!

Getting a life

Since I now have the reputation of being somewhat of a Scott Pilgrim nut, I have to keep that up. Last week I came across a couple of free hours to make a drawing and this is what I came up - a drawing inspired by Scott Pilgrim's movie trailer. I finished coloring it today. I'll update this post with the linework when I get the original drawing back (I wasn't home when I drew it). I hope you enjoy this!

And hey, movie distributors. Please make this movie open in Portuguese theaters. The sooner, the better. Deal?

Scott Pilgrim

Alright. You've been hanging out here for a while, plus you might know me from twitter and facebook too, and if that's the case, you know I think Scott Pilgrim is pretty much the coolest thing since the dawn of times. I really love the comic and I couldn't be more excited for the movie and the game. I mean, did you see those trailers? Epic stuff. Well, when the first movie teaser came out, I made this drawing. I did it very quickly (it's pretty much a glorified sketch), but I had to draw something Scott-related. Ta-da!

I'm sorry that this isn't exactly new work, but I'm still dealing with a horrible lack of drawing time. I hope you enjoy this either way!

A Garagem de Kubrick 21

A new thing for today: this week's Kubrick's Garage strip is being released here first, so I can post it to the webcomic's Official Facebook Page. In a few days it'll be up at Cineblog (its regular home), so keep checking it out there, because we always release the pages first at Cineblog and on the facebook page - this is just a one time thing :) Enjoy!

Hellboy 2010

A while ago I started talking art with Kelley, one of the members of the Night of the Living Podcast crew. He's also an artist and is currently working on his own webcomic project. Somehow we ended up talking about Hellboy, how awesome Mignola is, and how tough Hellboy really is to draw. I always have trouble drawing an half-decent Hellboy. It wasn't long before we challenged each other to draw an Hellboy, and here's my part of the challenge (it's a blog exclusive for now!).

Still not an ideal Hellboy. He's too rigid, but you know... practice makes perfect. I hope to one day post an awesome Hellboy in this blog, look back at this one and see how far I've come. I post these two versions because I couldn't decided on which I liked best - the right one looks strange at first, but I ended up liking the sort of watery look the colors had. Enjoy and let me know what you think!
